Daniela
NYC Cohort 1, 2021
Daniela, a mom to Jeremiah and D’Angelo, joined The Bridge Project as a Phase I participant and is now a Policy Fellow and advocate who’s shared her story with legislators in Albany. After being physically assaulted by her partner at her son Jeremiah’s first birthday, Daniela made the courageous decision to leave an abusive partner she had been with since she was 15. Trapped with no income in her own name, leaving once felt impossible. But because Bridge funds are given directly to mothers, Daniela was able to rely on $1,000 a month to sublet a room, buy food, and eventually secure an apartment. Starting from scratch, the flexibility of cash gave her and Jeremiah the foundation to rebuild their lives and begin a new chapter.

I was able to actually take time off after giving birth to heal and learn how to be a mother. The Bridge Project has allowed me to be the mom I've always wanted to be.

Alexas
Milwaukee, 2024
A year ago, Alexas Anderson found herself unemployed, a single mother of two, and expecting her third child. Upon learning about the Bridge Project, she was initially skeptical of receiving unconditional financial assistance. However, after applying and being accepted into the program, Alexas experienced a transformative shift in her life. The initial stipend provided immediate relief, enabling Alexas to purchase essential items for her newborn, such as a car seat, clothing, and diapers. Beyond these necessities, the ongoing support allowed her to establish a financial safety net, something she had never had before. This newfound stability empowered Alexas to pursue a career as an emergency dispatcher, a role that not only provided a steady income but also offered benefits she had previously lacked. Today, Alexas stands as a testament to the impact of unconditional support. With the assistance of the Bridge Project, she has broken free from the cycle of poverty, providing a brighter future for herself and her children.

Free money for the baby, unconditional! That seems a little strange when you've never had help. With the Bridge Project's help, I am an emergency dispatcher now.

Ayana
NYC Cohort 4, 2024
After giving birth and returning home from the hospital, Ayana was kicked out of her apartment. The support she received from The Bridge Project helped her regain stability—allowing her to purchase essential items, including a crib for her son, and cover transportation costs to and from pediatric appointments during the winter months. Ayana is deeply grateful to The Bridge Project for helping ensure a safe and more comfortable pregnancy. Today, Ayana has secured a new home through Section 8 housing in Harlem. She’s excited to be part of a supportive community with access to local resources. Just outside her window is a jungle gym, and she looks forward to the day she can take her son to the Museum of Natural History to see the dinosaurs. Ayana previously worked as an office administrator at a major social service organization based in Brooklyn. Though she attended college, she wasn’t able to complete her degree. In the future, she hopes to pursue workforce development opportunities once her son is a bit older.

Becoming a mother has been a transformative journey—challenging at times, but full of love and strength I didn’t know I had. The Bridge Project has been a constant support, helping me feel seen, secure, and hopeful for my baby’s future. I’m so grateful to be part of a community that truly cares.

Elionna
Connecticut, 2024
When Elionna first found out she was pregnant, she was excited but also aware of the challenges ahead. As a single mother of two children in a low-income family, providing for another child felt daunting. Joining Bridge proved incredibly helpful, connecting her with resources and support. Becoming a Bridge mom helped her feel less insecure and reassured her that she is not alone—many other moms face similar struggles, and she now feels part of a supportive community. Her newest joy, Ella'Miyah, was born at 38 weeks, surprising everyone since her older siblings had arrived early at 32 and 36 weeks. At birth, Ella'Miyah had a bit of fluid in her lungs and minor weight gain challenges, but today she is thriving at 12 pounds and 3 months old! Despite a difficult C-section experience, she has brought endless joy to her family. Her favorite things include watching Moana and sharing smiles with her mommy, daddy, and siblings. Fun fact: she was born on Friday the 13th!
